The dollar's strengthening receives a new push
In a speech on Wednesday, ECB President Christine Lagarde announced the beginning of discussions about quantitative tightening and noted that interest rates remain a primary monetary policy tool. This statement provided no serious support for the euro. Inflation in the United States exceeded expectations. The Consumer Price Index was 8.2% in annualised terms and 6.6%, less food and petrol. The dollar's strengthening received a new boost.
